well after months of fitting new bearings, ball joints, steering damper, complete track rod bar, complete drag link bar,new bushes in the chassis,it has even had new air springs and shocks, there is a terrible groaning screach type noise developed, the idiot at landrover who looked at it for me,said it,s the steering pump,so i instead of paying £245 for one from the dealer.i got one off the net for £150 delivered and it,s a genuine part, fitted it tonight, didn,t feel any different but the noise is still there.
it,s strange as the noise is only present when you turn left when manovering in a car park or very slow speed, and it is that loud people stare at you while parking the damn thing, has anyone got any ideas please, other than a match and petrol

sounds silly but is there anything catching when its on full lock? maybe something that the wheel is rubbing? have someone drive it and walk at the side of it to try and see at what point it squeaks!

ive done that gav, infact that was my first thought, but it does it if the car is stationary and you turn the wheel,im just wondering if the power steering hoses/s are ok,internally,or if it,s the box itself some sort of valve worn or sticking

That’s a fair list of work but the noise you describe doesn’t sound like ball joints, track rods, drag links or bushes to me. This sounds like a continuous noise and those just don’t have the movement when driving slowly on lock. As to air springs and shocks, never, not moving at all! Could be a bearing but you don’t say which ones you have replaced.

You need to know where the noise comes from, so if it were me, I’d be off to a nice big car park early on a quiet Sunday morning, I’d take a friend I could trust to drive. I’d sit on the wing with the bonnet up and have them demonstrate the fault whilst driving backward (that way if you fall off you don’t get run over!). Used to do it all the time before they invented heath and safety.

If it the engine bay i.e. belts or pumps or even the steering box, I’d be looking for trapped, kinked or loose pipes. When stalled on one lock you can get some very strange hydraulic vibrations in the lines especially if the clips are loose. If you think is still a belt – pulley try running some water on it as the noise is apparent, you might find the lubrication changes or removes the noise so isolating the component. Water is better than anything else because it will dry of course. I’d also check the lock stop adjustment, if it’s wrong you will get excessive hydraulic noise on FULL lock as the limiter in the box is operating.

If it sound like one wheel or the other (try walking next to each) I’d ask if anyone has been resurfacing the roads near you. Sounds odd I know but you’d be surprised just how bad a stone chip can sound stuck in a calliper and some times they only squeal as the wheel leans over a little on the wheel bearing free play.

Last one, you could try running water between the back plate and the disc or the driveshaft and the hub The idea is to get water on the driveshaft where it enters or exits the wheel bearing. Again stones can get stuck or the oil seals dry out and squeak, although that usually happens when going a little faster not when manoeuvring.

Hope that doesn’t cover too may eggs you’ve already sucked. Let’s know how you get on

Ok, missed that last comment whlist typing. I think you're on the right track. try the pipe and lock stops

well ive narrowed the noise down,it seems as though it is coming from the pipe that goes from the steering box to the pump.only problem is.is it the pipe or the box thats at fault, anyway of testing to find out:confused:

Well, if you're quite sure that the lock stop adjustment is not the problem, i.e. the fault is still there when NOT stalling the box on full lock, and you're quite sure the pipes are all clipped tight in the correct positions, I guess the pipe is the cheaper item to change.
