Whilst giving the interior a clean I noticed I have a lot of free play on the steering wheel. With the ignition off there is a good 2 inches of rotational free play before any resistance is felt, is this normal? When the car is running the steering feels fine and there is no apparent slack. The car drives fine but does tend to jump about a bit on a bumpy road but i've put this down to the rear airbags having been replaced with springs.
Do I need to worry? its MOT time next month.

you need to check when steering box is centered (hopefully when road whels are straight)towards either lock there is play, then holding track rod and drag link whilst someone rocks steering wheel should indicate were if any play exists

Hi, Thanks for the reply, got underneath it yesterday and whilst I can't feel any movement in any of the steering joints there is quite a lot of oil leaking out of the steering box, Is it possible to get an overhaul kit or will it be a new box?

was someone rocking steering wheel at the same time ?
you can get a new seal ive done quite a few ,not an easy job getting box off

Normally straight MOT fail if any power steering leaks so you'll need to get this fixed before you present the car for MOT
