Hello All,

I've been doing battle with the car all day trying to change the head gaskets on my V8.
I'm a bit stuck with the steering intermediate shaft. I've undone all the bolts, but it won't slide up the splines more than about 15mm. Nothing I can do will make it go the last bit I need it too to get it off.

Is there a trick with this? I'm loosing the will to live.

Also, do I need to take the power sterring pump, and air concomressor off? It's not very clear in RAVE, but it looks like they bolt on to the LHS head?

HELP!

Thanks jamesmartin,

I've tried a screwdriver, but I was a bit scared about cracking the UJ. I'll have another go with a bit more oomph.

if you have marked up (which you should of!), turn the wheel slightly to give you the play to remove - using a spare bod to lever up and out

It is coming off to get better access to the heat shield and manifold bolts that are totally fecked and refusing to budge.

Had a quick look, can't see any mention of removing steering shaft in head removal instructions, unless i am going blind.

It's the exhaust bolts, Wammers. Absolute s*dding nightmare. Had to grind a few off with an angle-grinder in the end but no access down there. Tried all sorts and they've fought every step of the way.

Ok but if he takes it off, he needs to mark it up and make sure it goes back in exactly the same place it came from. Set the wheels ahead and steering wheel locked.

Why are you removing it ??????? I didn't when I did mine

+1 .....shouldn't interfere with taking heads off??

I'm just following the instructions because I've never done it before! Intermediate shaft comes off to allow access to the bolts along the bottom of the heat shield.

I'd be interested to know how you got to those bolt without taking it off. I can hardly get my hand in there.
The heatshield bolts are so rusty, there's nothing for a socket to grab, so we're trying to use an Irwin bolt grip on them. They've been very good so far, but this is a real struggle.
Also, can I just rip the **** out of them, put them in the bin, and use that wrap stuff on the manifolds? Does it work? The heatshields are in okay nick, but they're far from perfect. I could just throw them away. It'd be easier!

In other news, the LHS head is off now, and cleaned up, new valve stem oil seals are in, and it's ready to go back on. The head gasket was blow around number 5 I think, blowing in to the valley. The head is straight and true though, and aprt from the gasket problem, it looks in good shape.

Yes you can that's what I did and yes just rip the heat shields off and bin them removing them was the hardest bit of the hg job

No not a single thing and I'm due to fit LPG soon so confident enough that the heat wrap is doing a good job. Before that I'm fitting new rockers on inspection a couple of mine were worn and one had its steel pad cracking up I should have replaced them there and then but didn't want to wait another week for new ones doh!!!!!

Worked in about 30secs Falk. Thank you for that.
I don't know how any of you managed to get the rearmost exhaust manifold bolt out with the steering shaft in. I couldn't get the socket and bar on with it there. Anyway, it's off now so that's that.

In other news, both heads are now off, cleraned and new valve stem oil seals are installed. Re-builing is going to have to wait though, we mangled a few manifold bolts, and one of the studs was destroyed in the flange trying to get the exhaust off, so I need to order some parts.

Wammers, do you know the size of the exhaust manifold bolts? They take a 12mm bihex socket, but I thought everything on the engine was AF? Anyway landrover ones are very expensive so I thought I might try and get some others from a bolt supplier. Also why bihex? What's wrong with normal 6 sided hex bolts?

Beer.

The head bolts are 5/8" AF that's why so many get rounded using 16 mm bihex sockets on them. Rest are a mixture. Manifold bolts are M8. Make sure you get HT bolts not Halfrauds specials. And thick washers to spread the load..

Of course before someone corrects me they are M8 setbolts all threaded, not just bolts which are shanked. ;);)

Hex Head Set Screws I think you'll find they are called :D:D:D:D:D:D

A bolt is shanked as you quite rightly state....
