Kernow nige

As title says the steering on my disco gives out a sort of scrapy groan noise only while turning the steering wheel while stationary or under parking conditions, on road driving she's fine. Any thorts?

Could be a failing pump then.... mind you it would be leaking I suppose if it was....hmmm

Steering ever jerky?

Mine also does this, but only sometimes. And the same as you have said. Only i was thinking something as simple as a dry ball joint. Oh well time to look at the pump then

Mine does this on start up. If I start up and idle for 20 secs then its fine . If I pull away too quickly I get the 'groan' I was thinking its either the pump or the belt

Mine makes this noise i think its the steering colomn bush but havent had a chance to investigate yet

alot of different answers here then lol. Mine will do it when parking only. And only sometimes.

Yep same as mine and i think its worse one way but only does it at slow speeds and normally if im turning the wheel quickly.

Truth is that the pas system is under-specified for the vehicle weight and tyre size. LR/British Leyland/BLMC have always been this way.

One no-cost thing to check is the pressure in your front tyres - if you go by the book and set them to 26psi you will get graunch/groaning. If, just as an experiment you set your front tyre pressures to 31psi you will find less noise and the steering just feels nicer.

I'm running colway mt's on mine, however the groaning has,'t got a louder going from normal road tyres to the muds.

I think there is a service bulletin on this somewhere. Its some sort of vibration caused by the fluid flowing in the steering hoses. Both my Disco's have done it. assuming everything else is OK, I don't think it was considered a problem. Just annoying.
Might find it on the Rave manual.
