Hello,

I thought while the axle is off i'll try and replace the lower sills in the steering box.
AND..
Oh yea another steering drop arm bolt issue.
Tried various means to remove it including welding a pair of stilsons to a 3' bar (cos i don't have the right size socket) for leverage...no luck.

Which got me thinking......Is it anti clockwise to undo the bolt?

Anyway i sprayed the nut and surounding area with loosening fluid after giving up today and i'll try again tomorrow.
 
Left the drop arm bolt overnight and got it off...took about 10mins.

Now the drop arm won't drop.
Started at about 09:00 and gave up around 16:00, the feckers still on there.

Here are some pics of the tools i used, plus a heat gun not in the photo.
 
Got mine off using a big bar from the top through the engine bay. Resting on the top of the drop arm and then hit it with a big hammer 3 hits and it came off,
Make sure you put the nut back on lose before you try it though.

Excellent... i did think thats what you were gona say, but i'll be standing on a sometning to do the job cos the car is up on stands till i get me axle back on.

...funny answer though expected.
 
Well today i decided to take the friggin box off....and i have.

Right wheres the best place to get a replacement box....new or recon thats the next question?

Will this car ever get on the road....grrr
 
Took the box to work and got the drop arm glowing red with a proper heat gun and it still needed to be hit hard with large hamer.

I think the trick was to use two metal wedges, one either side to to get an even amount of force and eventurely it was off.

So, i'll try to get the shaft out and change the bottom bush or bushes...its worth a go.

depends how hot you got the shaft it may well be scrap now
 
colour on shaft often ,its hard to know which is why its not recommended, dont use wedges as they mushroom bottom of box a circlip groove ,a puller and a whack on arm ,as with track rod ends its a taper fit
 
Well i have replaced the bottom sills so lets see how it goes....fingers crossed the box will be ok and the leak sorted.
