Well today after a short run of about 10 mile the steering became incredible heavy so I though it had lost fluid after stopping and checking, there was no fluid left in the reservoir, luckily I had some so I filled it up and by the time I got home it was heavy again, checked and it was empty, thought it may be a split pipe, but the oil is pouring from the output shaft just above the drop arm, can't see the point in stop leak as I don't think a weld would stop this leak !! ( I may be wrong) my question is whats the best procedure for removal of the box and the best supplier for a replacement, I welcome comments from anyone with a good second hand one that does not leak Disco series 2 TD5. thanks in advance for the replies.
 
Only advice I can offer was when mine let go in a similar style, I had a LR specialist replace it (not as confident DIY back then)

I had a couple of options, but took one with a 2 year warranty. I think it was “remanufactured”. 18 months later when that one went, my specialist covered the labour and obviously a replacement, which worked fine for the following 3 years until I sold it. I can’t recall the supplier, but will look it up.
 
No - sorry - no record of the supplier I used - was 4 years, a D2, a D4, a VWPolo, a D2 and 1 divorce ago.......

Are you up to doing the work yourself? Is expense a massive issue? Doing a seal kit is cheap, many decry it but it will get you back on the road for year or two. Next up is second hand, then exchange unit, re-manufactured route. Doing the work is not difficult...its an awkward bugger, heavy too, but not difficult. One off, one on in an afternoon.

The best way to remove the steering box is shown in RAVE. If nothing else it'll show you where the "traps" and finger smashers might be.

Thanks for the replies, downloading the RAVE as I type, I can do the work no bother I've built a few vehicles and owned unimogs and many 4x4 vehicles over the last 25 year, I was looking for experience from doing the job as theres always the right way to do it and the first way to do it and they are never the same !! This disco was only to sit at the house for the occasional use over the winter so I'm not wanting to throw thousands at it, I will probably go down the route of a re manufactured box as second hand is always a gamble especially when the job is a bit of a bugger, so if I do it once I can move on to the next repair that I'm sure will be along. Still a great vehicle to drive and I can certainly see the attraction of them. :)
 
I meant to update this, went to the local motor factors who got me a re-condintioned box for £170 plus my old one, got the new one took the old one off and fitted the "new one" after a few hours it leaked !!! good job I had not handed the old one in yet, took it off went back and had a rant, got my money back and decided to try sealing my own, £13 for a seal kit, fitted and the box back in, bled the system and so far so good no leaks. you wonder if some of this so called re-conditioned gear is just de greased and painted :)
