Hi All,
has anybody rebuilt the steering box ok, the only thing i'm struggling with is fitting the retaining ring back on the piston housing plate!
Everything else done ok. even making my own tools for the job but i have been struggling getting this back on, so hopefully someone has found a way?

press or tap the cap carefully in so it sits further in than will do once working, hook one end in the groove using a largish hammer tap ring in starting where its just beginning to lay over the box housing and work your way round you need to hold the free end as flat as possible to box housing

Hi James, thanks for that, i have been trying that and it keeps springing out, it was a bar steward to get out and is slightly twisted so don't know if that's causing a problem! Didn't know if there was a way of clamping it tighter a dropping it in?

There are quite a few good youboob videos on 4 bolt steering box rebuilds, just cannot find the exact search names.

try it the other way round ,have you pushed the cap in enough, bigger hammer or better hits, ive built a considerable number and it allways works

did you use the hole in the side with a suitable sized pin punch to remove the ring

I did push the piston in a bit further, after i cleaned out the recess etc before i fitted all the new seals, oiled them all up as usuall
etc. But the ring is just being a sod to get back in!
If i could find i pipe of slightly smaller size i was thinking of compressing it in that and pushing it into place or something!

Hi Doriz,
Yeah i checked out allot of u tube vids, and like the manuals they don't show you putting the ring back in place they just say fit the ring!
Very helpful.

persevere once you get the knack it will go in ,where you hit is vital hold it flat and just hit it were it is touching the inner edge of housing and keep it held down till enough is in it doesnt need holding

James your a star!
Just turned it round and done it in reverse and its gone straight in!! Hooray.
Bit late now to start fitting it to me car!

Just got to stop all the other leaks next, done the injectors, tank sender unit and water pump.
Oil filter housing next and cam cover with crank breather might make the drive a bit less waterproof!
