So finally got my truck running ok the other day, and drove it up the hill (first time on the road) to the village and back to sort out the pinking.

Coming back down the hill, only doing about 50mph it did a mental speed wobble and frightened the begeezers out of me.

So took a look underneath, jacked it up and found an incredibly large amount of play in both front wheel bearings !!! and one of the rears wasnt brilliant too! the track rod end rubbers where also perished

So today ordered 3 new wheel bearing kits, 2 trackrod ends, and some swivel oil seals, grease and front pads, as thought I may as well while i'm in there,

Anyway wiggling everything around, noticed the drop arm from the steering box has a few mm of play side to side, but I can see the splined shaft from the box isnt moving??

Am I right in thinking this is a tapered shaft that may just need the nut tightening or is that just with vertical movement. Is it poss that the splines are worn??
Oddly the other ball joint are in excellent condition with no play and look to have been replaced recently
The car doen have huge mudplugger wheels so I wouldnt be supprised if they have caused the play,
cheers eddy

What vehicle are we talking about here?

sorry my bad, its a Range Rover Classic , thanks

OK you can try tightening drop arm retaining nut to sector shaft. But drop arm usually needs a puller to remove it. There is a sector shaft adjusting screw on top of steering box. Lift front wheels off floor and undo large nut holding adjuster, it's best to free this off to adjuster fully so you don't get interaction as you adjust. Tighten down adjuster a little at a time. Keep turning steering lock to lock checking for binding. When you are satisfied all play is gone and no binding lock to lock nip up retaining nut.

Hi wammers, thanks for the reply. Ok Ill give that a whirl tomorrow and report back! I really dont want to have to take that arm off as looks like an arse. That and I hate using my anglegrinder lying on my back as always seem to burn my head lol. So hope it can be resolved jut by tightening it up, cheers!
