13.8 is the normal minimum on modern lead calcium batteries, the smart regulator on my alternators kicks out 14.8 for a period after starting then drops progressively to 13.8 and as I said, there are alternators that kick out surprisingly high voltages for short periods. The idea is to keep the battery charged on cars that only do short runs.14.6 might be okfor a while, 13.5 is good once settled, but 17.8 is not. The regulator has gone south
