14.6 might be okfor a while, 13.5 is good once settled, but 17.8 is not. The regulator has gone south
13.8 is the normal minimum on modern lead calcium batteries, the smart regulator on my alternators kicks out 14.8 for a period after starting then drops progressively to 13.8 and as I said, there are alternators that kick out surprisingly high voltages for short periods. The idea is to keep the battery charged on cars that only do short runs.
 
Problem solved. Fitted new alternator and had a Land Rover independant calibrate the steering angle sensor (a new one had been fitted and needed calibrating to the vehicle). I now have a new, unused heavy duty SAS contact ring for sale, if anyone requires one, this one came as a repair kit, from Germany
