I'm going to have to get land rover tool box vids on to build the axle back up. I haven't taken enough pictures when I stripped :oops: hopefully between rave and vids I'll get there. I did diff too. Both diff and case are painted. Got the bushes out rear trailing arms too. They just need the treatment prior to paint. I feel too tight to paint the parts with epoxy - tis expensive stuff. Think it's worth it?

Do it once. Do it proper.
No point in spoiling it for a ‘hapeth of epoxy :D

I probably wouldn't bother TBH and just use a good quality etch primer on the bare metal and high impact resistant paint, axles take a real beating as they are closest the ground and all the debris gets thrown at them, just make it a mission to clean back and paint the rusty bits every year.

@dieseldog69 do you know if there's almost a rear axle gasket kit? I'll be going timken bearings. @Chrisw8 has made me jealous of his yrm bush kit too :(

There are only two gaskets and an oil seal on each side of the rear axle, the stub axle gasket, drive member gasket and the oil seal goes in the stub axle, check your half shafts and you'll see there is a raised and machined bulge in the shaft that the seal holds the oil back.
 
Yeah I will. The epoxy on the chassis so far is really tough. It all just costs doesn't it!

Oh yeah :( but it does explain why people just drive them into the ground, the costs mount up really fast when you do it properly.
 
They certainly do. Yes I cleaned up those half shaft lips yesterday - thanks.

Really looking forward to building this axle up. I think I'll build the lot up inside bar the wheels.
 
Nice one! I'll get ordered. Don't suppose you know the size of those a frame arm bolts do You? 30 isn't a snug fit and will need to order another big spanner to add to collection. I want to paint those up too

Not sure, but 1" 1/8 is very near common imperial, sort of is 28.5ish but then we're into 1"9/64 and 1" 5/32 and multiple fractions lol

You do own a welder, buy a cheap 30mm spanner and run a cold bead of weld up one face and slowly grind it back to a perfect fit, if you then heat it and quench it in used motor oil you will case harden the face and make it stronger.

I did think all the imperial was gone by 96. I'll measure with vernier

If I am getting into a heavy parts finding session then I break out the official Land Rover Discovery CD from the DVD rack and it has all the parts from 89 right through to 98 for the D1 including all the optional equipment part numbers.

Well worth buying if you are going to keep yours for a long time.

@Hicap phill part No.s differ from the use of two different props, one is the tubular diesel variety which uses standard UJ since 1948 to 2016, the other is the solid bar type prop shaft which was used on the V8 engined vehicles to clear the catalytic converters, these props were of a slightly wider angle variety with bigger yolks to mitigate shock loading that a tube type prop would absorb easier.

Hope that makes sense, as that is pretty much verbatim as it was explained to me lol
 
Now that's a bit of landy knowledge. Think my old army winter gear is going to be in full use whilst working on both these in the future. Working in an office makes you soft :rolleyes: we can't have cold kidneys!

Welding up the chassis is a pain in my arse. Probably the only bit that I don't particularly like doing. Not much left though. You can through on the spring seat too ;)
