well you were lucky your wheels never fell off.you can use the original alloy wheel nuts on them. I had alloy nuts on steel wheels on my disco for ages

Steel wheel nuts have a domed end which matches with a domed recess in the wheel. The matching domes act as a taper fit.
Alloy wheel nuts have a flat end (some have a captive washer) and the surface of the wheel is flat too. The fixing relies on the clamping pressure, hence the need for a longer thread. The holes in alloy wheels are slightly smaller too, so they're a closer fit to the stud.
