Hi guys,

I seem to remember having read that Defenders has aluminum bodies, so what is that red stuff on the enclosed pic?

Or should that be mostly aluminum bodies?
In that case, which parts are steel, and how would you treat something like that? (grind and paint in place, remove to paint, ignore until it falls off...)

Perfect example of Accountany overcoming Engineering. Paint is cheaper than Galvanizing and the only trouble is the paint lasts to the warranty expires. So when you buy a replacement buy a galvanazided for about a quid more.-----BB

That part is steel, and the metal piece that runs along the top of the tub is steel, and most of the framing you can see at the back is steel. Its mainly just the panels that are aluminium.

I would sand the rusted areas back to bare metal taking care not to damage the panels, then spray it up, if you get the colour and respray the whole bit you might get away without seeing much of a difference as the edges will help hide any colour differences.

Hopefully I won't have to. This car had the advantage of being quite nearby, but there's another one three hours drive from here that looks like a better vehicle. I's three years younger, same mileage, Webasto, a/c for only 1000 pounds more, and no visible rust.
I don't mind the small dings and dents, but the rust in the pic really is an eyesore.
BTW the seller says that it's a well maintained vehicle and that "it has had all the recalls, including the clutch plate". What recalls is he talking about? (the car is from -99)

Fancy talk "Rear quarter panel capping". Plain English "That f***ing rusty bit at the back". It has a 100% sucess rate in getting one for me anyway. Remember they are sided and differ slightly. Best to take the old one along as pattern. BB

The early td5's had an issue with the flywheel - basically is a two part assembly on the td5 to dampen engine vibration. Some early models developed cracks -yrs 98 to 2000.
btw the bulkhead is steel too, as is the structural frame

Bulkhead is steel, a magnet can be useful if in doubt, then again I found a 90 recently with a plastic drivers side wing!

Hey, even I had read about that one! But I didn't know to connect the two.It really pays off to read the backlog around here! But he said all the recalls I've googled a bit and only found that and something about front left brake hose. I guess one could say"all two recalls", but it sounds a bit silly...

I knew about the frame, courtesy about the LRM ads about galvanized frames. But I wasn't sure about the bulkhead, thanks.

It's a common problem then?I sure couldn't use that phrase when ordering parts for my current car, cause that description could fit anything behind the steering wheel and back...

Been busy with work & it being summer been out camping caravanning and all that sort of thing. - off work now for a few weeks following a spinal op - but can't sit for more than 10 minutes!!!
