..... on a P38 diesel is this a big NO NO?

Some old idiot, after topping up the oil, forgot to replace the oil cap last Thurday evening, meaning by the time I got to work it had spit around 2 litres of oil over one side of the engine and engine bay ...... and made a mess of the works car park.

I was thinking of getting the engine and engine bay steam cleaned but has anyone done this and what problems did it cause?

After trying to find anyone in County Durham to do this I used some engine cleaner I already had from cleaning the bikes engine so sprayed this on, left it for an hour and used a low pressure spray, with hot water in, to remove the thick of it.

The question is now do I get it steam cleaned or not and if so does anyone know anywhere in the North East that can do it safely?

.......and,by the way, YES that old idiot was me :( I put it down to the start of senile dementia as I will be 50 later this year. ;)

Steam cleaning or hot wash is fine if you leave the engine running. Cold pressure washing is somewhat more risky. But if you do as James says, but get engine up to temp and leave it running there should be few problems. Just keep well away from direct jetting of vulnerable components.

Get your engine nice and warm then cover the electrics and battery with some plastic bags etc but be careful where you spray and use low pressure if you can.

Thanks for the advice, after a trawl of the internet/ yellow pages for anyone round about, I might give it a go myself using my dad's wallpaper steamer with lance attached.

It is low pressure and small enough to be directed away from the electrics.

I do believe speedy hire in peterlee has them available if not try brake and clutch cleaner with lots of elbow grease :D
