Hello everybody, this I my first post and I am hoping someone out there can give me some information before I have my 2012 defender 90 hard top with 8,000 miles on the clock towed down to my local dealer on Monday. Driving home yesterday I smelt burning and a sensation that something was going on under the bonnet. PULLING OVER there was steam coming from the coolant tank and the remains of what looked like an explosion from the cap all over the engine in that area. Still a strong smell of burning. It looks like an emulsion of oil and water had come from the cap when it blew although the cap was still on. Not being particularly mechanical minded I put a small amount of water in the tank and limped home a few miles. When returning I washed down the residue from the engine and it is now stood outside. The engine temp was still showing as normal however. I phoned my local dealer who said it could be the head gasket ! Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like a blown head gasket to me ...not an expert but have had this happen before on another 4x4 we had.:) Seems a bit weird considering the age/mileage of your vehicle , I'd ring your local LR dealer first and foremost.
:welcome2: to LZ by the way.
Muds :)

P.s post this question in the relative section 90/110 engines etc , more peeps will possibly read it?

Engine oil heat exchanger leaking oil into the coolant, the rad will be blocked with emulsified oil hence the overheat.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I will have it towed to Guava my local service centre for them to look at on Monday. Magura
