Hi all.

I have been Land Rover-less for a while but have just bought a Series 3 after a long search. However, now it starts but stops as soon as the key is released. My assumption is that this is a failed switch module on the back of the ignition barrel/steering lock assembly. Is this the most likely cause or could it be something else?

Is it petrol or diesel? My petrol s3 had this issue when I bought it. It would carry on running if I was carefull about turning the key back rather than letting it spring back from the start position. Eventually I bought a new, old stock Lucas ignition barrel. On a petrol model the entire barrel needs replacing. They cost in the region of £80.

Oh yes, forgot to say it’s petrol! Thanks.

Its a fiddly job but not too difficult. Make sure you connect the wires to the right spade terminals. I took a picture of the old one before I took it off cos my memory is shocking. Disconnect the battery first. There is a chance that while you are doing it, you will disturb wiring for other bits, so expect sommat to not be working after.

Possibly. Its worth a try, it is £20 cheaper. A lot depends if you can dismantle you current switch and if the problem is with the contacts in the switch or the springs etc in the barrel. Some one else on here might know the ins and outs of these switches better than me.

Has it got a ballast resistor? If it has then check that as if it fails it will cause the same symptoms.

Agreed, but that's why it could be a problem - not standard, plus could be badly done, plus not on wiring diagram, therefore advice to check for one.

It was just the switch module. New problems now though. No indicators and the charging light is on up to about 40mph.
The no indicators is probably due to you fiddling about near the steering column, there's not a lot of room there from what I can remember. Check you haven't disconnected some wires from the indicator stalk.
