Hi there,

I have recently been having some trouble with my 2002 defender td5. The trouble started when i went to start it and it wouldn't fire, just lots of whining from the fuel pump. So i replaced the fuel pump (gave up trying to remove the tank so cut floor) and filter but the whining is still there. It now runs after many cranks but i have got white / grey smoke at idle and black smoke under load, where as it never used to smoke at all before this problem occurred. Now from searching i have read that the injector seals + washers could be my next step but there is one thing i can't understand. Why or how is air getting into the fuel system without the engine running if the injector seals + washers are at fault? Is air getting sucked past the seals and into the fuel system or something?

Many Thanks

Adam

air can seep back into the fuel system from the cylinders if the copper washers on the injectors are not sealing

How good is your battery? Don't be fooled by the fact it seems to crank OK. ECU needs a healthy battery. Have you tried jumping battery to assist?
