What is the starting procedure from hot and cold for a 1989 110 with a 19j diesel engine?
I have heard that these can be difficult to start from cold......surely not!
Thx.

I remember my old nad engine ( same engine really) used to start with no glow at all. I discovered this by accident when I wanted to flick it over , just a 1 sec blip for a reason I can't remember and it fired right up, cold engine.
Did have good compression that lump though.

As above, they are not difficult to start but you just need to do it right (anyone who says they are difficult to start is either doing it wrong or has failed glow-plugs).
Feet on the floor (i.e. away from the pedals unless it is the clutch), apply pre-heat and then spin the starter. Should start without fuss every time.

My old 2.5NA D was a 100% reliable starter regardless of the external temperature. When I noticed it was getting a bit lumpy on start-up and producing a bit of black smoke I (correctly) diagnosed a faulty glow-plug, bought a set of four and replacing them was as easy as changing a set of spark-plugs. Clean, easy starting was restored.

Taken these out of the owners manual, they say it all really. ;)

yep my 90 had a 2.5n/a in it when i got it if you deviated from the book you were in trouble, if you touched the throttle or some other clown did. best bet was walk away and leave it for 15 mins

However if you did as the book says ...first time everytime

With my old engine a quick turn of the engine [ two seconds ] and then 10 seconds heat resulted in an instant start on the turn of the key.

Been reading this , although mine is a decent starter , but not instant maybe , maybe 8-10 turns of the engine from cold , the question I have is that my heater plug button has been set in the dash, do we keep the button in when cranking over after the 10 second heat or heat button out and crank , I would like to try and reinstate the heater plugs of the key again at some point but previous owner had made this alteration

My series 3 has similar set up except it is the other way around with starter on the button and heat on key, probably for the same reason.
Standard set up would have heat and cranking together.

Yep I thought the same but have been letting the button out , the button itself is a stiff as the clutch lol so my thumb is getting as bit as my left calf muscle
