My 2.5 TDI t5 will not start.

If the landy is left facing up hill the car will not start. It seems to start when facing down hill. I have been told that it is most probably air entering the system. I have a sequence that should clear the fault: Turn on ignition to position 2, wait for three minutes, floor the throttle and turn the engine over for about 30 secs (10 cycles) and this should purge the system.

I have been given a few options to rectify the fault. Starting with the fuel system filter, then the pump followed by the injectors.

Is there a Non return valve in the system? i presume that air getting into the system would prevent it from starting. i have been led to believe there is a control valve on the side of the engine that should prevent the fuel from draining back to the tank.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There is another better air purge system .....

try this ...

Gears in neutral as usual. Leave the driver's door open so you can hear the pump running.
Turn the IGN key ON till the dash warning lights show.
LEAVE IGN ON FROM HERE ON!

Wait till the pump stops.

Now press the throttle to the floor, and let it up, and do this five times.
The pump will start running again.

When it stops you can deck the throttle five more times to restart the pump, and you can keep on doing this as many times as you like.

However, it isn't solving your problem, which is AIR (or gas) getting into the fuel gallery in the head. Start to think about an injector lower (copper) washer leaking gas from a cylinder up to the gallery.

Take care trying to start the engine with the throttle floored as this throws the injection system into a panic mode, and it flings in HUGE amounts of fuel, so much that the engine may "flood" (yes, even a diesel) and it may end up not starting. NO throttle is the safe way to try to fire up a TD5.

I think i might have flooded it when i last tried as i had the pedal to the floor. I will try your proceedure and let you know how it goes.

Once it is going I am taking it down to the diesel specialist in town so thay can have a look.

\i have taken the landy to the local diesel specialist. I have a feeling it was the fuel pump. I couldn't hear it every time i turned the ignition on, even after depressing the throttle. They are checking to see if there are any a air leaks too.
