Hi, can anyone help? My W reg P38 won't start. Over the past few weeks when I turn the key the engine has laboured to start. Today it started once, then I get just the clicking sound under the bonnet. The battery is fine (11.7 on a mutimeter) and the glow plugs were replaced about 2 months ago. I think that maybe the starter motor has gone to the great starter motor heaven. In the info window it said engine summat (didn't catch it) but that has now gone. Anyone got any ideas, am I right? 11.7 volts is as near as makes no difference a flat battery, should be 12.5 volts plus. The message could have been "engine disabled" or a number of other messages that come up with a flat battery. First step fully charge the battery, if it still doesn't show 12.5 to 12.8 volts could be a duff cell in the battery. I assume all the battery connections are clean and tight?

Doesn't matter when you bought it, 11.7 volts is a flat battery. If the battery is shagged at least you can take it back under warrenty. Is the battery big enough? You need at least 110 amp hour and something like 900 amps cranking current for a diesel.

thanks for your quick replies guys. Data, I'm gonna give it a jump with the wifes mini, its a diesel so should have the power. If that doesn't work I'll take the battery out and charge it overnight. J, thanks for your offer but I now live in Germany (in the Army) so it would be a bit far for you but thanks very much for the offer. I'll give it a go now. Back in a minute.
