hi guys been a while since i have been on, i've had a starting issue with the RR for the last few months, sometimes car starts fine, another time it cranks over and splutters into life like the fuel has been drained but it has been intermittent, well today it has manifested itself as a fuel leak, with a very strong smell of fuel under the bonnet. it seems to be from the passenger side of the bay, but i can't find it as the fuel is evaporating. so i'm looking to pick peoples brains, where to start the search. or what the problem could potentially be. it's a 2003 4.4 v8.

I think the fuel feed comes into the engine bay via the passenger side.

Have you undertaken any work recently that involved pulling injectors? Guessing no.

It may be an injector seal problem.

Check the shrader valve is secure.

no only work has been a service and replacing the plugs, but the problem was there before that

The shrader valve is somewhere on the fuel rail, probably drivers side. It is basically a tyre valve, never come across a loose one, but worth a check if you have the proper tool.
Fuel filter is at rear of car so we can discount that, alternatives are fuel line connector to rail flexi, 16 injector seals plus shrader.......not sure about fuel tank EVAP purge system on these. My money would be on a purge hose or charcoal canister fault if such a system exists on these.

Outside chance of duff fuel rail.

well it gives me something to go on anyway, once parked the fuel leaks and bingo car won't start till it pumps new fuel through. been a right pain and of course finding part numbers is a pain too

Start with shrader, but there should also be a fuel pressure regulator, basically anything that can be removed from the rail could be the culprit.
Something is leaking and allowing the fuel to return to the tank. In a good system even after running dry of fuel it should start almost immediately!

well a quick update, the fuel rail on the l322 is one way, so no return pipe or pressure regulator (thats in the fuel filter at the back), anyway could not find a leak anywhere, it's in the garage today it definitely smelt of fuel on the passenger side under the bonnet and has done the last few days and the garage smelt it the other day as well, just had the garage call there is no smell of fuel and they can't find a leak either. i have ordered the high pressure flexi line that feeds the fuel rail and will replace that as a preventative measure. but short of something expanding & leaking when the cars hot we are at a bit of a loss at the mo

ok bit of an update absolutely no leaks on the fuel system injector seals etc have also been checked but still a strong smell of fumes around the front corner of the engine bay. there is quite a thick pipe that comes from the inner wing to a circular solenoid mounted on the front of the engine, am i right in thinking that's the fuel vapour line? also in that area is the regulator/filter for the lpg system. is it known for the vapour line to leak? i'm going to check over the lPg system for leaks too.

So now it's Lpg....anything else you care to mention?;)

I had Lpg and tbh I've no memory of it's odour because it didn't leak. Pure guess it smells like a normal bottle of gas which is perfumed with 'Eau de rank', completely different to petrol which is soothing to the nasal tract, it's up there with Tar and freshly mown grass.
