Hi all, I have visited this site for all my Freelander issues and you lot have a lot of knowledge! My Freelander has decided not to start on the turn of the key, it can turn over for quite a while before firing up and when it eventually does start i get a big cloud of stinking smoke out of the exhaust. It has been suggested that i have an issue with the ecu but to be honest I cant afford for a garage to guess what the issue could be. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Unlikely to be the ecu - more likely to be glow plugs, injectors or low compression

Where are you based?

I've had the glow plugs changed and the injectors plugged into diagnostics,3 were showing a minus and 1 a plus but I was told this is ok...??I'm in poole dorset.

This will sound stupid.... but disconnect the MAF sensor... mine did exactly the same until i disconnected the MAF.
I then replaced it.

I have disconnected the MAF sensor and that has seemed to of solved the lumpy running issue, it drives like a dream now it is just the starting issue. The MAF didn't make any difference to the lack of starting unfortunately. Did you get a Bosch one or just one from the internet, like the £25 ones on ebay?

To be honest, i've bought a few sensors...
a cheap eBay one for 20-25 quid... but it failed within 1 week.
replaced it with another cheap one,, which lasted a month.
so... I got that swapped under guarantee, but still bought a Bosch unit..
i now ONLY used the cheap MAF for diagnosis - the bosch ones last way way longer.
AND..... I've been EGR Blanked for ages too!!

Just a silly thought. Are the glow plugs getting any power to them, or do they even work, not unheard of to get new ones that dont work.
