Hi all, I'm new to this, but hoping I can get some pointers!

I am trying to fix my wife's FL 1. It is an 06 TD4 (sport) with 115000 on the clock.

About a month ago, my wife suffered the symptoms of a turbo failure which I kinda of diagnosed, but was later confirmed by a proper mechanic. The car had suffered a slight overrun, but stopped before any damage was done (or at least that is what the mechanic thought).

We replaced the turbo with a second hand turbo from eBay, which physically looked OK. We also replaced the oil and filters etc. Once back together, it started ok and ticked over fine, when it revved it smoked... A lot... But as there had been a lot of oil in the intercollegiate and pipes, the mechanic expected it. (He did tell me to high pressure hose all of the pipes, the intercooler etc, so I got a lot out, but there was likely still residue). I took it for a blast and it cleared a bit, then a proper motorway run seemed to get rid of all of the smoke. Very happy.

The car sometimes 1 in about 10 times, struggled to start first time, but it was generally ok.

Approx a week later, the car wouldn't start at all, turned out to be the low pressure fuel pump - tapped it with a screwdriver and the car started fine. So I replaced the fuel pump (eBay, turned out to be very noisy) and filter. Didn't completely fix the problem. Wouldn't start initially, but generally did on the second turn of the key. Next failure was on the motorway, lost power and when accelerator depressed it like I was actually slowing. Managed to limp to work. On leaving work, car started second time round, but ran fine and performed normally all the way home (another 30 miles - motorway).

I figured it was a faulty pump - supplier happily sent another out saying it should be no noisier than the original. Replaced with new pump, still same problem (if not worse) with starting. Now takes 3-4 goes of a good few seconds of starter to get it running it seems ok, went to work yesterday - fine, drive home after 15 mins on country road, hit motorway and loss power. Still runs smoothly, but hardly any power.

More research, replaced the cam position sensor. Starts better, but still not first time every time.

Now at end of thether and can't find a combination of syptoms like this.

Any help or pointers?

Just want to get the car running so we can sell - my wife has lost confidence in it, so it has to go, but needs to go running!!

Thanks in advance

I can only go by my own experiences with my td4 i had a similar issue and found it to be the fuel pressure wiring loom , a common fault it seems also has your mechanic checked for any fault codes ? There are members on here with far more knowledge than me which will be able to help , best of luck and let us know how you get on . I know how your wife feels when i first brought mine i did wonder what i got my self in to but imo i would sooner have my td4

ive got no idea but theres lots of peeps who should be able to help on the forum, hope it gets sorted mate :)

Having spent some more time surfing the pages - it was mentioned that the LP fuel pump should stop buzzing after 20-30 secs (having reached pressure), this one doesn't - it just keeps going. I also don't need to have another person hold it as I can hear the thing from the drivers seat it is so noisy!

Although the Ebay seller told me it was OE quality - is it likely that the pump just isn't up to the job?

I now wonder if there are 2 faults (independent) the first the starting issue (doesn't matter if its hot or cold), the second is the power loss - possibly due to different causes? Turbo control solenoid and LP fuel pump maybe?

You could do with reading the live data from the pumps. Any decent code reader should give you live data information.

I think replacing LP pump twice means that’s not the problem. To me it seems like a fuel pressure regulator issue. Unfortunately it is hard to reach and need to take starter motor out first. Usually the rubber o rings drop pressure.

But to check easier things first, try running car without LP pressure sensor and also without HP sensor. I hope you know where they are. But as someone mentioned, check the cables and connections for HP sensor. Is the connector green or black? If it’s black that’s very likely the issue or one of them.
