Its usual to put them to the starter mounting bolts on the bell housing but I don't see why you coudn't run one to a bellhousing bolt on the shortest side.
 
I don't think it's been mentioned yet but you may need to clean the contacts in the distributor points. It's the small spring loaded switch in the bottom. I've just started mine up after a few months sat in the field. At first it wouldn't start, checked fuel, voltages and turned ignition off and used an insulated screwdriver to open the points. Slid a bit of fine emery cloth in there and wiggled it around. Put it all back together and hopefully you may have some success like me.
