Hi folks. Start my 2.5td up last night drove about 400 m then I could hear this awful rattling/whirling noise. I stopped and then realized that it was the starter running. I turned off the ignition and still it was turning over I had to disconnect the battery. Any idea's?
Is it the solenoid or the starter itself? Any help would be great.

Cheers.
Is it that it is stuck on and needs to taken apart and cleaned or just replace.

Couldn't do much tonight but gave it a slap of the hammer and its grand now. Battery is flat though. Might get a new solenoid.
What's the best way to get the starter off? Suppose it's best if I remove the exhaust pipe in the way.

Got starter off and cleaned the solenoid etc. The gears from the starter are a bit damaged. So I'll pick up a new starter in a while and replace it with a new one. Would I be better to get a newer type starter for a 300tdi or just get a td one?

If starter still turns ok just fit a new solenoid and gear.

Thought that I'd give an update. With the clear cold nights we have been having here my battery is dying on me. And coupled with my bad starter it's been letting me down. So I'm going to replace the battery but want to replace the damaged pinion gear on the starter can someone please tell me what starter my 2.5td has (im not able to check it myself and can't get a proper answer on Google)

is your bad starter draining your battery,it would originally have had a paris rhone starter but you can fit 200 tdi or 300tdi starters try googling nad500210

I don't think the starter is draining the battery I think it's that the battery is weak and this combined with the starter that is struggling to turn the engine is letting me down. The engine is just not firing up like it used to.
The teeth on the pinion gear were a bit damaged so wanted to replace them.

replace the starter in that case

I only have the funds for either a new battery or new starter at the minute which would be the better option..

if it starts better with jump leads ,replace battery if not starter, cant you get decent used ones if cash is short

It starts fine with jump leads I'll start hunting the breakers for a starter too. Thanks your help is much appreciated..

Put new 800cca 95ah battery in and the starter is brilliant. Probably just battery letting me down after all. Thanks jamesmartin
