02 TD5 Auto 68k
As per title the starter is spinning but not engaging,battery was a bit suspect and was replaced with a new one, I pulled the starter and checked the teeth on it and the ring gear, all good.
checked the contacts which looked worn so ordered the kit (plunger and contacts) fitted today but still the same.
It will start after anything from 3 to 10 tries when started everything runs as it should no dash lights flashing.
Is my starter fooked ?

If you use a thick screw driver or 3/8 extension bar to connect the terminals directly at the starter does the solenoid kick in?

If so then the supply to the solenoid is broken and needs attention. If you can't get the starter to engage in this way then it could be the actual solenoid itself.

Bench test it is easiest way. I realise starters are buggers but once you get the hang of whipping them off quickly you will be quids in. I have saved £'s doing my own strip, clean and rebuilds this year.

Thanks Greenhornet,
After posting I went back out with the meter to check a few of the suggestions from other posts it was soo cold one of the leads broke off my voltmeter, after that I pulled the starter again and got it onto the bench, testing with another battery was inconclusive there was some corrosion on the lead from the starter to the solenoid but at this point I'm going blue and losing patience so phone call to a mate in the trade will bring a bosh replacement by 5pm tomorrow.
The starter I took off is not a denso but a cheap ebay job by the looks of it, no plate or serial No's anywhere.
Hopefully this will cure the problem. I'll let you know..

Got the same problem as you and have a new starter going on monday mine is a 200tdi

sounds ;like the Bendix screw is ****ted up. when ya starter spins it fires the cog forwrads on a helical screw thread. that then engages the flywheel. and disengages when power to the starter is cut off.

If starter is spinning but not engaging then the bendix screw thread is goosed or clogged or the cog is stuck down.

It's a pre engaged starter Red.

Bosch starter fitted today, all good and a clean bill of health.
Turns out a power drop from the solenoid to the starter left it unable to push
The cog all the way forward, (corroded lead).
Bring on the snow..

Was right about the cog not engaging though
