Hi everyone, So went out yesterday ... did some shopping .... Land Rover wouldn't start, One loud click when turning key. ( Series 3 24 volt )

I have ...

Cleaned and checked all connections and terminals.
Hit it ( starter ) with a hammer.
Tried shorting the solenoid , lots of sparks , no movement from the starter.
Put in gear and rocked.

Anyone got any ideas before I take out starter motor?

Update on this.... tested everything with voltage reader. power is getting to the starter. Smoke coming from the positive terminal on the starter when the key is turned and held on. Starter motor buggered then?

Sounds like it to me, yes. Might be worth taking the back off the motor to check on the state of the brushes - might have broken up and something shorting out he 12V supply to the case...

Yes everything was disconnected. A few rocks and it was free. I'm sure there is a way of getting it out without dismantling the whole Land Rover ...does the exhaust manifold come off without having to remove the carb?

It's out.... just had to take out one of the bolts on the wing bracket. No life on a bench test. Does anyone know if I can use a 12v starter?...this one is a 24v ( expensive )

can you supply 12v and lots of amps to one, as long as the solenoid gets the 12v too can’t see a problem
