After getting land rover series 3 home last week it has turned into a project that I am soon to be regretting !!

It now won't start . lights dim when trying to start it . Does that mean its more likely to be the starter or the battery ?

I haven't moved it for two weeks because the day I got it home the gearbox got to the point where it won't go into a
ny gears , however I have started it everyday until today .

Thanks

Sounds like battery. Turn the lights and indicators on and see if it dims then. Or better yet use a voltmeter.

I would guess at the battery,
please don't regret buying your series 3 they have feelings you know, I have learnt in the last 18 months you take two steps forward then take one back, I have lots and lots of problems but never once regreted buying her, they need lots of TLC

I suspect if you've been starting it each day but not running for long, it has gradually reduced the battery power. Try and give it a charge up and all will probably be fine.
It can be challenging and a roller coaster but try to remember that it's a project after all.

A spare battery, a charger and some jump leads are really useful for this sort of thing. May be the battery as has been said before it may just have run down. If it's a petrol you can always use the starting handle - if there's a bit of life in the battery to energise the coil. If the gearbox is getting worse it might be a sticking clutch or failed hydrauilics - have you tried bleeding the clutch? and is the bleed nipple at the top?

I appreciate all your help and advice . I sure its the battery now the lights won't come on and the Meter says level of battery is very low . re the gears the fluid is full I've had clutch hose replaced this morning because it was leaking system has since been bled and still nothing . it goes into reverse and nothing else drove it 40 miles home last week family jumped in and it wouldn't select gears ,this site has been very useful and I continue to appreciate any advice anyone has to offer . Thanks

if you can't physically move the gear lever into 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear positions, even with the engine off, its almost certainly the selector interlocks. You need to remove the detent balls and springs and take the top cover off the gearbox. Its possible that the reverse selector rod is not going back to its home position which means you can't select the other gears. Adjustments are possible. Have a search through, theres a few threads on here covering this one.

Neil - where in the country are you? I'm sure it'd help if there's somebody around you who could have a quick look and tell you whether you've got a pup, or whether you've just got some teething niggles to work around.
