haynes' book of lies is often wrong. i'v used them plenty of times wen they not been accurate

May be, but at least it will tell him where the starter motor is, which he was asking earlier.

hi. i have located starter. removed, cleaned out, and refitted. buts its no better. starter is spinning but not turning engine, as if the cogs are not engaging.

does anyone have any other sugestions? how difficult are they to open up to fix?

mine does this on my v8, the solenoid is probably tired and needs replacing

dont know the cure to your problem, but definately start using wading plugs....

specially in the timing belt cover if you dont want to end with a snaped cambelt..

had one in the timing cover and iv now bought another for the gearbox

just had a thought, you say you can hear the starter motor spinning but doesnt engage..

could it be the spindle (bendix) is not coming out fully and so not engaging?
did you test the motor when it was out to see the bendix coming out and spinning?

Have you tried to turn the crank just a little, say enough to rotate the ring-gear about a half dozen teeth onwards past where the pinion is thrusting to now. could be that the ring-gear feed-in is now worn in that spot from trying to engage when bendiz drive was full of crap.

iv tried all them things and no luck. the bendix drive thing isnt workin.
my local landy garage is stripping it down on tuesday for free, then letting me know if its cheap/easy to fix or better to get new one. fingers crossed

Got the same problem after going off road yesterday.

It was very wet and I must have been soaking the starter motor. Thought it was the battery cause even yesterday the starter motor was working worse each time.

Searched it and saw this thread.

Gona clean it first now.

Thinking now, how does muck get in it ?

Ok, I'll answer my own question. Seen where muddy water can come in.

Cleaned it with petrol, put it back together and tested.

nothing, noud, nix. :wtf:


Should I have waited longer the let the petrol evaporate ?

(It had more life before I cleaned it out.)

Any expert advise ?
