Hi guys, my starter motor has decided to pack in, I’ve taken it off and it’s just sticking, does any of you know where the cheapest place is to buy one??

When the solenoid jumps forward it closes a set of contacts to energise the motor have you tried power to the motor direct as it may just be the solenoid contacts.

How do I do that, I’ve just tested it with jump leads and a screwdriver touching across to start it

Touch jump lead to the connection that goes into the starter body, this by passes the solonoid switch.

If its an original Lucas then rebuild it. Its most likely the brushes which are under £5 to replace. There are a number of sizes so you need part numbers off the starter casing. The "new" starters seem to be lasting a year or two which some failing immediatly whereas the orginals with a few new parts should do 20 plus.

I have just stripped it down and cleaned it and put it back together it did turn but is intermittent still

The copper brushes in the top was about 3cm long do think they are ok but I couldn’t see what else there is to change, it is a Lucas one by the way
Did yu check brushes and commutator?
the brushes in the end looked ok to me and unfortunately I don’t know what a commutator is ‍♂️

Are the brushes moving freely and the springs pushing down ok? A thing that fooled me for a while was a poor connection between the brush holder and the end cover. The later designs have both the brush holders joined on a ring and the earth bolt through it. Mine were separate and rivetted on. I drilled the rivets, cleaned it and pop rivetted it back, worked suprisingly well.

Yes they are and was a bloody pain in the arse to get back on

Commutator is the copper and insulator stripy ring at one end, that the brushes sit on. Needs to be clean with the copper strips slightly proud. Clean with fine emery cloth and wash grit off with petrol.
