Hi, I'm about to attemp to remove the starter motor on my 200tdi defender.

I was wondering, i had a look earlier and could only see the bottom nut/bolt secureing it. How many bolts are holding it on and how many wires will i have to undo?

Will it come out through the bottom or do i have to get at it from the top of the engine bay?

Cheers

I haven't done one for a while, but if i remember correctly it comes out the top, there are 3 bolts & its much easier if you drop the exhaust front pipe .

Drop the first part of the exhaust from manifold (may need to remove chassis cross member to do that). Remove air filter and intercooler hoses. Get a small ratchet/socket set, be prepared for much grunting and knuckle scraping. Have someone help from above. And it will still be a bstd of a job!

Hi folks, thanks for all the replys. I managed to get the starter off today in about 1 1/2 hours.

Took me ages to find the top bolt, I kept looking under neath for it when i should have been looking straight over the top of the engine at the back.

Managed to do it anyway, it wasnt that bad of a job with the exhaust down pipe removed.

Had to take the washer bottle off to get it out once freed from the engine though.

It only has a 1 spanner rating in the haynes manual so any novice can do it really.

I did mine a couple of years ago ,not a nice job, worst part was getting the two little bolts off the bracket that holds the exhaust to the block.

I did this about a week ago. It's a 20 minute job at most but it's much easier with 2 people. Take off the down pipe first. There's 3 bolts holding the starter in. Go in from above and lay across the engine (from below you will lose the skin from your arms). If you have another person, they hold the new starter from underneath while you bolt it on, if not just go from above and drop it on. Replace the bolts and down pipe and the job's a good un.

Btw, it will come out top or bottom with the down pipe off but I'm just telling you how I did it which was very easy and short.

Pffffft, what was you all hanging around for, did mine in 30 seconds last month...

The Tdi was hanging from an engine crane, though ;):D:D
