Occasionally when turn ignition key starter completely dead, ignition lights are on etc but nothing happens, no click nothing. Owned car 3 1/2 years and done it about 5 times, so not often but a pain when it does. Bump starts no problem. Went into local garage first time it did it but they couldn't find anything. Reluctant to change starter motor in case something else. Any ideas ???

Sounds more like a dodgy connection to me. If it happens again try wiggling the battery terminals see if that helps or to check for dodgy earth put a jump lead from battery to engine see if it makes a difference

Think gavbriggs has got the measure of the problem, bad earth try cleaning your earth points, the earth strap from body to engine.

Think I may have cured the problem, did it this morning, checked leads from battery then went underneath, power cable to starter fine but cable that guess operates solenoid bit loose, crimped it a bit and all seems good now. Fingers crossed!!!
