I have my landrover 1988 2.5 td booked in for Wednesday to get fixed but carnt seem to start the landrover turn the key and nothing every one ses it could be a dodgy earth connection but I don't have a clue were the earth from the starter motor is can any body help asap please thanks

starters earthed through the fact its bolted to the engine ,you should have an earth strap going from battery to chassis to transfer box ,check your getting 12v to spade terminal on starter when keys turned if not folow ack to switch or you could start it by shorting that spade terminal to main cable on starter

First off I would try the battery, Charging, charged. Holding / delivering charge..

Then hit the starter with a hammer, to get a bit of life back in her. Might be a few dead contacts. Maybe try turning the starter (rock the defender in gear).

Then if that fails it may be an elecy problem....

Check the positive and negative runs make sure they are OK. Check the ignition contacts / wiring. (immobiliser?)

If none of that solved the problem, I would get the phone and arrange it to get recovered.......

Try pushing the key into the ignition switch as you turn it. Works for me. If it works you need a new ignition switch.

Had the same problem with mine recently, was very sluggish, wouldn't turn over the engine, it was replaced it in Holland when I was on my trip, I checked the ground (cleaned it with a wire brush), had the battery tested at the Landy shop and I went over the wiring for any loose ends, then I hit it with a hammer and it would ocassionally turn over, after it was pulled off, the teeth were ground down and it wouldn't move into the proper position, had a lot of play, contacts weren't engaging, so she got a new one and it was a world of difference. Not sluggish, and it definitely sounded stronger and turned it right over.
