Just had to replace my starter motor and as the title suggest when it was removed water gushed out, correct me if I am wrong but I thought the starter motor would be sealed from the outside elements, have I missed something?

If water gushed out the starter then at some point water has entered it and sat in the motor casing. Probably came in via the bell housing while it was in deep water.

No they are not really sealed, unless all the correct wading kit has been fitted.

Did do some wading, have snorkel and wading kit which routed up the inside of the snorkel. Didn't fit wading plugs though, if I'm honest I'm not entirely sure where they (yes I am a noob). Wading kit I have are axel and gear box breathers is there anything else I need?
