Quick question, anyone know the size of the nut in the electrical connection at the starter motor on the 200tdi?

Turns out the connections are all sound, but there’s a stray earth wire that doesn’t look long enough to connect to anything (the other end is to the chassis). See photo.
The starter has been sluggish at times, but would work fine after a few tries. Last week it wouldn’t turn over at all. I just gave the starter a tap with the handle of a hammer and it turned over, though still sluggish. New starter, new solenoid, or just take it off and clean it out?
 
What condition is the battery.
Little solenoid wire being loose or dirty could be the wouldnt turn over at all problem.
You may have moved it while hitting it.
 
Earth wire could go to bell housing bolts if it's got a 10mm ring on it. My old 2.5nad had it to the side of the block, the other end fitted near the chassis engine mount.
Will it reach engine mount to block bolt, that's a short run- anywhere on the block or gearbox will do really.
We need to know how large the ring and cable is on that earth really, can't tell from the pic.

they used to fit earth wire from block to a bracket on the back of the starter,when starter gets replacced the bracket often stays with the old starter so no earth connnection but then one isnt needed you cant get a bbetter earth connection than bolting starter to flywheel housing

My 101 the earth from battery goes straight to starter then flywheel housing to chassis and gear box to other chassis rail dont know if thats standard or not on 101's...

Sounds right. I’ve changed the starter twice and never noticed that cable!

Mine was a 2.5nad now a disco 200 and I think I've got an earth that size now but I'm unsure, will look tomorrow.
Have you got an earth from the block or gearbox or transfer box going to the chassis or battery at all? If you have then you can disregard that spare earth BUT you can't have too many earth's!!
As James says, the starter (and your water/oil sender's) earth to the block but have to also get back to the battery negative. The rubber mountings on the block/gearbox stop that so you need an earth to 'bypass' them . The battery negative should go from the battery to the chassis and chassis to block/gearbox.

As I posted before my earth goes from battery to starter which then goes to both chassis rails from bellhousing and gearbox...so starter has supply direct from battery positive and negative so no crank or slow I know its not a bad earth somewhere...

Yes, and I stuck another on fit good measure some time ago!
 
Forgot about this until now.
Just had a look at mine and that cable goes to a bracket on the starter (as James said), other end is bolted to the block. I have another earth cable off the starter that bolts to a hole in the chassis engine mount.
This is how it was when I got the vehicle around 19 yrs ago.
The block earth isn't needed but does no harm.
