Well what a nightmare! Hard to get to! And behind all sorts!

I just spent a day and a half just doing it. If anyone wonders how I did it I'll do a step by step explenation how I did it as I struggled for info while searching so hopefully it might help someone.

1. Cut down a 17 mm spanner so I can get it on the bolts on the Steve Parker conversion down pipe (this was in a tight space!) and with the cut down spanner on the bolt I put an extension bar on the spanner at a right angle and hit it with a hammer to crack the bolts.
2. Climb underneath and undo the exhaust clamp and pull the conversion pipe out of the engine bay.
3. Remove the heater box
4. Undo the engine mount bolts and slacken the gearbox mount bolts
5. Undo the wiring to starter and undo/remove the 3 bolts on the starter motor (very awkward to get to!)
6. Jack the engine up to make space to get the starter out.
Pull starter out - it was still very tight even after all that!, even that part took 20 mins to do and was like a puzzle.
7. jiggle in and refit new starter motor.
8. Put back together in reverse of theese steps.

This was the first time iv done the starter motor and it was the toughest job iv done on it even the bolts where stuck solid! I didn't do it in theese steps but that's the easiest way I found out after spending many hours trying to jiggle the bugger out without jacking the engine or removing the heater box.

Im not a mechanic so if I done owt wrong there let me know incase I have to do it again (hope not ever!!!)

Money's a bit tight at mo so I got a britpart starter motor, anyone used one of theese and has it lasted long?

Hope that is useful to someone - if I knew this before I started it would have saved me a day and lots and lost of fruity language - hope the neighbours weren't listening! :D :D :D

Anyone else done one on a disco 200 tdi in a 90? How did it go? If not what's the other engines like to do?

Jesus you're the first person I've known to mess about with engine and gearbox mounts just to change a starter motor

Did I do it wrong? It was a serious bugger and I honestly doubt I wouldent have got it out without doing it. I spent hours trying to get it out without and there was no way without! Too tight a gap!

Have you done one? How did you manage

Cheers, tom.

Yes I have and it was a f*kcing nightmare lol. I removed the manifold and downpipe

Thanks for your reply!, I started to do that and then stopped and had a cuppa and a nosey/think with a torch then stopped that idea straight away and bolted the manifold back up. Then I found undoing 4 easy bolts. (Engine and gearbox mounts) took bout 10 mins and then jacking the engine and leaving all that untouched miles easier than batteling with the many awkward manifold bolts and intercooler pipes so it was 100% miles easier!

Wish I stopped and thaught bout that first then I bet I could have done it in. 3 hours instead of a day and a half!

Pleased it's done and wish I stopped for a good think bout it first !

If I just dropped the down pipe I would never have got it out! I tried for hours and I couldent!

When I turn the key the britpart starter is definitely sounding different. It's a deeper sound instead of the "chirpy" sounding Valeo unit it replaced.

I deliberately went for a known brand when I bought mine. I was really strapped for cash (nowt new) when I bought it but I spent a bit more and got a higher quality one. Can't mind who made it though

Cheers the wolf, I'll give it chance and fingers crossed see how it goes. If it fails I'll update the thread so people can be wary of them.

Atb tom.

This often the downside of retrofitting a different engine to stock.

Just need to get a kid with small hands to do it for you :)
