Need some help guys.

Going to give my starter + solenoid an overhaul this weekend or replacement if necessary but struggling at the starting blocks.

Got the bottom bolt out nice and easy and the top one wasnt too bad using a 3" extenstion, UJ and then a big long (18" maybe) extension inbetween branch 2+3 on the manifold. Got wirng off easy enough but now i cant get the flaming thing out from underneath the chassis. Im pushed it - pulled it all over the place under neath. Had it up by the radiator and tried to get it out of the wheel well and no luck!

Currently, its up on chocks and ive removed nothing but the starter itself (i.e. wheels, prop shaft etc.

Whats my next step?

it should come out with a simple tug toward the rad………

if its a bit stuck with grime give it a few taps with a rubber mallet or a wooden block

Doesn't foul the filter on mine, what model is it cos I'm on about a 3.5, probs the same on a 3.9 but may have moved the filter etc on THOR or GEMS

If its a remote filter surely could just move it off the mount ?

should be heat shield on exhaust manifold then I think and thats it, not a clue on PAS pump as I don't have one but try giving it a smack and see if it loosens up

Its interfering by about an inch so not sure smacking it will do anything except loose my skin on my knuckles :).

Think im gonna get her up in the air tomorrow. I reckon if the axel drops a few inches ill get her out no problem. touch wood

I got mine out and I just scrawled under, sagged springs too!

Just smack it with a small wooden or rubber mallet and it'll loosen off! If not you could see if starting it in gear with the bolts out will knock it off but I wouldn't do it that way, I'd go down the mallet route

Sorry DR evil - weve got wires crossed.

Ive got the bolts out and have got it out of its home in the bell housing but i cant get it below the axel. The unit is loose and bouncing around in my under carriage i just cant get it on to the ground.

Looked at it but couldnt see a point to get the jack inbetween the axel and something hard enuff on the chassis. any pointers ? Only got a tiny halfords special 2tonne jack.

Oh! I thought it was still in the bellhousing and stuck

In that case as James says drop jack it up and see if you can get some clearance

If you jack on chassis it'll lift up and drop axle at the same time

Yer going to have ago tomorrow now. Only a little jack so im gonna have to construct a jenga tower of bricks etc tomorrow to do it but should be ok!

Use old sleepers if you have any or some sturdy bits of wood, don't use cinder block or concrete though……they can crack under pressure and slip

Or you could jack up on one side of the axle as that should in theory drop the other side a little

Frankly decent manifolds are worth it. Not only do they improve engine performance but its easier to get your starter out!! :D

ALSO it's ten times more difficult to get at some of the manifold bolts on the head! Marvellous!!
