Ok so just went ahead and bought new starter.

But an earlier query is still bugging me and I need to know the answer for pure reference.

So can anybody explain this as cant seem to get a straight answer locally...and its driving me nuts...I NEED TO KNOW:confused:

My old starter wasn't working - wanted to know if just solenoid so I followed the procedure as described to me and as shown on many online vids etc...SEE PIC...

Starter out - onto bench - connected to good battery....

METHOD1

NOWT AT ALL - NO LIFE WHATSOEVER.

Then with no reasonable explanation decided to try this (Neg jump led still attached to same place but positive placed on other terminal)...SEE PIC...

METHOD2

Loads of sparks - can only keep connected for second as sparks are fairly aggressive but the motor instantly whizzes and spins.

SO...is method 2 another way to bypass the solenoid ie - if method 2 gets motor spinning does this mean motor itself is good...or have I just been wrecking an already knackered motor a bit more???

All I can find is reference to method 1 for bypassing solenoid - nothing about method 2.

I'd really love to know.

pics arent working for me but if you put neg lead on starter flange and pos to large terminal on solenoid bridging the small spade terminal should activate solenoid and spin starter, placing pos lead on terminal on starter body should spin starter without soleniod

What you have effectively done is to bypass the solenoid in method 2, so it apperars that the solenoid is kerknackered!

Replace the solenoid and problem solved. ;) ;)

James first one I tried was method advised to me...

POS on solenoid terminal that battery normally connects to...NEG on starter body. Use screwdriver to bridge battery terminal with spade connector.

NOWT happened - no life at all.

So I kept NEG on starter body and with POS just touched the terminal that holds the wire that goes into starter motor itself.

Starter whizzed into life with lots of sparks.

But as my second method was off the cuff so to speak and not what was described/advised - I was just wondering if this still meant starter itself was ok.

Am I right in saying that I have just confused things and that bridging the battery terminal on solenoid with spade terminal will only activate starter if solenoid is ok...but placing pos feed straight onto terminal that feeds into motor is actually the method for bypassing solenoid.

That's how I am interpreting you and if that's correct then basically I have just been trying to bypass incorrectly to begin with...which explains why I was so confused about this.

just seen your post oldseadog bud...and yes - figured out that I have just been confusing the methods...in otherwords I've been a bit dim.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Still on the same thread even if slightly off track. I suspect the front bush needs replacing on my starter. But looking at the position of the starter raises my question. Is there enough room to remove the starter without disturbing the exhaust?

Easiest to remove the downpipe! ;):)

If you are referring starter on 19j engine which is the basis if my thread, then yes its easy enough to whip out. I've had mine in and out 5 times without having to remove anything else.

Hi,
upgrade to a later Bosch starter (permanent magnet, reduction gear) it will make huge difference, I have a 2.5NAD fitted with a starter from a 300tdi auto and it starts quite well, a vast improvement on the old style starter which melted both cables and battery when it failed, mine will currently [sic] start on a small battery as fitted to a Nissan Micra....

Just to wrap this up - thanks for all the help guys.

This particular Land Rover was just one headache after another - looked like it was a 'proper' project which wasnt what I wanted for this year - so sold it on - made a few quid and bought myself a runner!
