That last one cannot possibly be right.
The TD4 didn't appear until late 2000 on the X plate
there is no TD4 badge on the rear door or an "S" on the front wings
It's either wrongly described or had a transplant
sorry i ment K series not L, ive seen them on there just quite a distance from plymouth, and tool wise should be ok im a panel beater but i like to do my own mechanical,done engine and gear box changes etc 
. i like the look of the three door ones, how are they with putting babies in the back? never been in one only the 5door.

i heard about the problems about the petrol, and to be honest there arn't may cars that i like kind of had a few mainly performance and this is the only one that has hit me, also the girlfriend likes it, always been after a 4x4 car something nice looking and would do the job, always looked at the pajero and shogan but insurance said no and dont appeal as much as this, and normal saloon wise, i dont really like much as i work with them all i know what they feel like and are like to drive, thought for the money one if these couldnt go wrong, what do i need to look out for on a deisel version? repairs be ok as i can do then, but parts are all land rover and exspensive.
any advice? but still would like to get a td4 if possible

I have a 2000 TD4 Auto 5 door, which is a really good car
But,
despite thoroughly checking it out before i bought it -
in the first month it cost me £1,800 in repairs on top of a £300 service bill
Had an injector go and couldn't be removed - head off job
If yer lucky you'll just get a window regulator go
If not, the VCU will seize £300
it may take out the IRD £900
also may take out the rear diff £300
Pre 2001 Freelander had a mismatched diff ratio that aggrevated this
There's so much elektrickery in the post 2000 models that it can only be analized on a machine costing £90 to plug in

"mondo mode"
These vehicles can get expensive to keep, and get dumped out if a fault is too expensive - one immediate first check is to look underneath and see if the propshafts are there. If not, walk straight away - no further consideration.
I really like mine, it cost me a bit and I am only thinking ahead for you with a young baby.

True, it'll be a listing error or some dealer who isn't sure of the difference. I only posted those to show that he could find ones within his price range. Another option would be local auctions but this would be a dodgier way. I have seen one or two genuine Td4s on a 'W' plate & have also seen one or two L-series on a 'Y' plate so it seems there was a fair overlap of the models in 2000/2001

im 27 and got my freelander about 2 months ago. Since then my off side rear reg has gone, the same door has had the door stay bracket shear off and is getting welded tomorra. and now the brakes are starting to stick when it has been standing for a bit.
But except that all is good

The solenoid on the starter probably won't be engaging, a common fault & can be fixed by a repair kit off ebay.
The Freelander is a good car, but give yourself a decent chance & seriously avoid the petrol models. There are enough lesser gremlins to keep you amused without having to buy a new yet still design flawed engine. head gasket failure & liner slippage is extremely common & once the liners go, the engine is scrap.
