So speaking to a car design professional about noise and “trackters” it was interesting that while there is nothing we can do regarding modern car incremental gains in manufacture techniques, like properly isolating aluminim and steel with thick, durable, electric and chemical isolating and vibration damping adhesive (hello... JLR...) one of the biggest game changers in modern car, van and especially SUV/4x4 noise reduction, apart from the well documented dyanamat, foam, etc: is the advancement in shock absorbers that can greatly reduce road noise, especially as speed increases from
side road to motorway cruise speeds... something I can find nothing on. and I mean nothing. anywhere. He also suggested having been in one of the latest heritage defenders and older defenders that the huge difference in refinement is pretty much all
down to two things; a) sound damping and b) superior suspension damping in his humble opinion! There are whole threads, even forums dedicated to the former but nothing I can find on the latter!

does anyone know of or has anyone bought dampers / absorbers that reduced road noise?

are the new standard ones sold by all the usual stockists modern shock absorbers or the same old stuff kept on running?

the only upgrades I can see either lift (don’t want) or enhance off road (nice but..) are there any others that take advantage of what we have learned in last 20-40 years???

It used to be said the only real difference between a Mini and a Rolls Royce was sound insulation and damping.

I can't hear any road noise over the engine/transmission noise :)
dynamat and the replacement for strip caulk (seal the physical floor pan, transmission panel gaps) is your friend there. my ears no longer bleed at least ;) interestingly also he said you only need to cover about 1/3rd of centre of panel in dynamat: huge weight, patience and cost saving!

I have loads of self adhesive sound matting on the seat box, the floor panels are sealed and I have heavy rubber fitted mats. The noise level is improved, but the TDi is louder than my tyres. Of course, maybe my tyres are quiet!

it's probably a case of which of the orchestra of noises we each handle best lol, still prefer the defender over the lovely quiet smooth hirecar i just had for a week

so kit installed, standard hight - truck is higher... its it possible that the old ones were saggy or was I running on lowered sus?

Saggy old springs. The mother in law reckons she's a foot shorter than she used to be  She's always exaggerating though, I'd say about 10". However, the horns and the hooves she's developing will soon compensate for that :D
