Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd pose a question.
Just about to fit new crossmember from pressbrake but can't decide what bolts to fit with - Stainless or normal?

Read a report on pdf land rover manuals and it reckons the metal reacts and will rust out mild steel quicker than normal - We all know that aluminium and steel effect each other but not thought about stainless. the reckon it's not worth it
what does everyone think on here ????

If you're replacing bolts, why not go stainless? If the price difference is only a few quid, it's worth it.

I make a habit of using stainless nuts, bolts and washers. I've not had a problem yet, but I do slobber them with copper grease, I slobber the **** on every thing.
Don't use them for anything really important as they are not as strong, unless you use aircraft quality.

few years back we had a porch to build from oak and the custumer wanted stainless screws fookin nightmare had to pre-drill every 1 only slightly smaller the the screw any smaller a hole and they sheard off for a past time

Ha ha, yep, bin there, done that . I used to poke them into a tin of car wax first, it helped a lot.

Stainless steel should be fine for anything not exposed to any major stress, as mentioned it is more brittle so is liable to crack/break rather than bend.

For rear x-member this would suggest that for recovery/straping points, towing gear etc proper steel fasteners should be used but body fixings at rear and other bits and bobs stainless should be OK.

I'd forgotten that stainless was soft.
Remember doing a fence for someone and had to pilot all the bloody holes

What about the fact that stainless might make my nice new shiny crossmember rust quicker

Stainless bolts are a pest and bind when torqued so you get the opposite effect of what you want

ASP on stainless to stainless, if it picks up, and you have anything above M12, then good luck shearing it
