HI guys, is it just me that doesn't seem to have any real success with the forum search options?

Just out of interest : The accepted way of extracting more poke from the original Stage One V8 is to remove the restrictor plates, but has anyone ever worked out (or obtained rolling road results) how much advantage the process is worth, bearing in mind you are still left with a LC engine. Does the surgery actually release more power/torque or does it simply move the manuf. peak output figures to a different RPM? One the same note, when LR went mad in '86 & raised the power of the 110's V8 to 134 bhp, surely just a change of carbs alone wasn't responsible for an extra 20 bhp :clap2:

If you're going to upgrade the power - remember the 110 had disc brakes.
The stage one drums are big, but everything has a limit!
My stage one was fitted with a rebuilt high compression engine from a RR, which probably had a similar raised bhp. It was plenty - driving a series at 85mph is a test of nerve.

id think about swapping pistons to make engine h/c, l/c are allways disappointing imo

Thanks for the various replies guys, but I was really looking for answers to my OP.
Perhaps there are just not enough Stage One owners on here, it is after all a rare beast amongst the 'leafers'

changing carb/jets and cam is only difference ,h/c is best mod

As you said yourself the easiest way to increase the BHP is by removing the restrictor plates. My Stage One still has the plates in and can easily accelerate straight up to 75mph, or 85 downhill with the wind helping, what I have had to do though was renew the wheel cylinders as hard braking when cold pushed the pistols out to far, as I stamped on the pedal to centralize the brakes.

The restrictor plates were a bit like having a small original carby on a VW it limited the ultimate amount of power , and did so by restricting the total amount of air fuel mixture you could get in the engine . I ran a X reg Stage 1 V8 SW from new , and removing the restrictor blocks helped with towing power mostly for on autobahns when over in Europe. Didnt really notice any extra acceleration but certainly pulled better at speed ( eg over 60mph) the down side was a slight increase in fuel consumption ,as you would expect . 70/80 mph (indicated) cruise towing was norm.:)

My W reg Stage One, towing a 1960s / 1970s Eldis caravan that has a chassis , could easily accelerate upto 70mph plus when overtaking and returned 18.6mpg! Which is more than my V reg SWB Land Rover with it's 2.25 litre Ex Military Recondition engine and standard carburetor.

You know this is a 2 year old thread...

I had a Stage One a while back (got totalled, long story). Man, those drum brakes make me pucker more than once!
