I dont know, apparantly my normal mechanic staryed it then turned it off quick. But I was local when it happened so I drove it back, gently. What was up with the engine to warrant removal?

Its an auto, squeeking like a fan belt slip was heppening on easing off the excelerator, then the engine got louder and turned into a knocking sound
Thanks everybody out there for this input.Sounds like the crankshaft drive pulley has started to fail. It's a common problem which shouldn't cost more than £150 to sort. Providing you use the OE Corteco pulley, the noise will go away for 100k miles.
No need to change the engine at all.
Find another mechanic, who knows the issues with these BMW engines.
Thanks buddy. Me tooReally sorry to hear of you bad luck
really need to rethink that handle maybe to include “ un “
hope you get sorted swiftly
Thanks mateCare to share?
If it's a TD4, the engine isn't known to fail, other than the odd crankshaft breakage.
