First off, its a 1997 P38 2.5 DSE and its coil converted. I bought it with winch bumpers fitted front n rear. Just had to take evasive action to avoid hitting an oncoming van in the middle of the road on a bend and ploughed into a Devon hedge embankment at +/- 30mph. It climbed the bank before I could steer it back onto the road with a thump :/ Now I have an airbag fault. I'm guessing the airbags didn't go off because the bumpers have been changed, but thats based on my thinking that the sensors are in the original bumpers? (I may be wrong!) The axle also punched a small hole in the sump, not overly worried about that as I can weld it, but I really dont want to be driving round with an airbag fault, lest the bloody thing goes off in my face while driving. Believe its also an MOT failure. So, I guess my question is can it just be reset or is there anything else I need to be concerned about? Cheers, Paul

As it's a 97, I'm not sure of the location of the sensors, they may be 2 yellow boxes, one each on the chassis legs visible from under the bonnet. If they are not there, they will be internal to the SRS ECU located under the rear of the centre console. If the internal sensors have triggered, they cannot be reset and the ECU will have to be replaced. with the external sensors, just the sensor has to be replaced. You need diagnostics to see what is going on.

Thanks Datatek, no yellow sensors on chassis rails. Looks like this is a problem the previous owner had at some point... The SRS ECU has been relocated into the bottom of the lock box for easy access! I will get a replacement asap and let you know the outcome :) Just out of curiosity, why do you think the bags didn't deploy if the sensor triggered? :/

Where is the lock box? Make sure you get the correct replacement ECU, there is more than one version.
If the ECU has been re-located, it is also possible that dummy loads have been substituted for the airbags, the wiring is not just a pair of wires, each circuit has a precise resistance value.
Does your car have side airbags in the front seats? Look for yellow tubing under the seats to identify, or a small tag sewn into the seam at shoulder height.

No side bags on a 1997. ;)

By lock box I mean the flip top lid comparment behind the hand brake, the SRS ECU has been locaed inside with the wiring coming through a hole in the botom. . I wouldn't be suprised if the previous owner had put blanks in if thats a possibility, he obviously bashed it about frequently enough to warrant it! I've ordered a replacement sump already, am I right in saying it's the ROVER PT: AWR 6507 code that I need to match or the longer serial number under the barcode? Thanks for all your input!
