whether you can drive it depends what's wrong.. if spraying water on the belt topped the squeek then it should be ok to drive but should also be a quick and easy fix (adjut the belt or replace it) if water doesn't stop the noise then it's gonna be sommat else squeeking and as The Mad Hat Man says it might be water pump... whic is OK to drive till the pump packs up and you ruin everything.. in othr words try not to drive it till you know what's wrong with it

Most often source of a fan belt squeak on a 300Tdi is the self-adjusting tensioner bearing.

Fairly easy to pop the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand. You can usually 'feel' rough bearings and even water pumps that are 'on their way out'.

As above. BEFORE doing anything else, try the "penny trick". It will take 10 minutes, cost what it says on the tin (1p) and as likely as not, will solve the problem. Worked for me.

I had a massive squeek coming from my tensioner, tried the penny trick, replaced the belt, replaced the tensioner bearing (£5.50 on e bay) and it didn't go away. As a last resort i tried the old knackered fan belt and the squeek stopped. I could not believe it. Turns out the new belt was 7pk and the old one was 6pk

dab of copper slip on a paint brush, fire up engine
let brush run on inside of belt, chances are its the tensione or new belt needed

wd40 stops a belt squeak, it also draws moisture out from the rubber makin it brittle, (over time) stops the squeak till u get round to doin it, may possibly be w/pump, can be replaced in a few hours... dont forget the bent spanner ( viscous coupling)

so is replacing the water pump a bit tricky? any step by steps on here? mine has a sort of intermittent squeeking when accelerating sometimes...dont think its the belt because of the sound of the squeek...so i'm thinking it must be water pump...

there are plenty of threads on here for replacing the water pump. iirc there was a good one posted up a while ago with pics

try a quick search and you should find the answer ;)

My belt started squeaking suddenly about a week ago. Sprayed a little WD40 on it and squeak disappeared immediately but came back within a day. Had a spare used belt from previous Disco so swapped em and sqeak has stopped. Belt that was on was in bad condition, cracked surface and a split right across it at one point - a join maybe? was so precise it didn't look like wear. Dunno). Anyway, new belt ordered from Paddocks so I'm not caught short and all currently ok.
