Please forgive me if the question is daft........
I have a new (to me) Freelander 2. 10 years old but only done 12K miles. It has Wrangler tyres, they look 50% worn. Wear appears even but with the outside edges a little ragged perhaps from some mild off road use. When the car corners, even very slowly, the tyres squeal....the sort of sound you hear in USA B movies with cops in car parks. I am thinking.....just thinking mind......that this is due to the all wheel drive not keeping the tyres in step with the radius of the turn. How does the car do this anyway? I know that when locked solid in 4 wheel drive the tyre wear is horrendous probably because of the scrubbing but I am in 'road' prog. So any ideas? I don't want to scrub the tyres away to nothing before I have had a chance to use them. I have just driven from Glasgow to Southern Spain and the fuel consumption has been fine so I am thinking what ever is causing the squeal is minor or it would have hit the mpg. Any insight most welcome!

An update: The noise is on both left and right turns. The steering is not particularly heavy so I guess that rules out the power steering pump.

I always thought that was normal, especially on smooth surfaces. Amplified by certain rubber compounds

Well Yesterday I was at a ITV testing centre in Spain trying to get my Freelander passed for import (it failed by the way...it seems the tints on the windows which had gone through french and uk mot's were not ok for spain where you have to be a registered drug dealer to use them) and dozens of cars were being driven through the very busy centre. Mine was the onky one which came out squealing. Tyres are very expensive so I don't want to wear them down carelessly and I see all sorts of scares on here about 'overloading' the drive train if there is the slightest thing out with the tyres.

Do they squeal at a bend in the road, or just tight turns? You'll probably find the tyres have a high ratio of natural rubber content for all season grip
