I recently fitted a set of used 16" wheels to my TD4 and they have a strange characteristic - they squeal like buggery on left hand corners. Right handers are fine but turning into a left hander makes the car sound as if it is 'on the limit' - a real head turner but not in a good way LOL.

The wheels came from a 2002 V6 and have good Wrangler tyres with even wear and 6mm of tread. There was no noise with the old 15" Hankooks and nothing else has been touched so I am really puzzled.

Any ideas guys?
 
have the same but mine are still 15" look forward to some reply's i thought it might be it needs a four wheel track!!!! what do you recon?
 
I was thinking along similar lines and a 4 wheel laser alignment couldn't hurt (apart from my wallet :D) but I can't think of any reason why it should happen after a simple wheel change - the only real difference is a change in tyre width & profile but the rolling circumference is identical. :confused:
 
Mine was doing the same thing with wranglers on but as they were only just legal i changed them for a full set of 205/70r15 insa rangers and that has solved it. I put it down to being worn tyres on mine.
 
I just double checked and now realise that I have Goodyear Eagle NCT5 on the front and Goodyear Wrangler on the rear (same profiles though). I wonder if the combination might have problems - I might try swapping fronts to rears and see if that stops the squealing.

I just took the car into my local tyre emporium and they checked the tracking - all within spec. So after a bit of head scratching they suggested that there might be a compatibility issue between the Eagles and the Wranglers. Both types have different compounds and the Eagles are more suited to 'normal' cars. Closer inspection revealed a small bulge in one of the eagles' sidewall so the decision was made for me - a new pair of Wranglers was bunged on the front.

The result has transformed the handling with no sign of tyre squeals even with my 'spirited' cornering style. There is also far less road noise too so I am a happy chappie once again.

my wife and I never use anything else on our freelanders but wranglers best tyre for less road noise and good of road

If I were you i'd be putting those new tyres on the rear of your hippo as soon as possible else it won't be squeaks you'll just be hearing:eek:

Ooops, I completely forgot about the VCU problem with mis-matched tyres - I'll swap them over next weekend.
