Right....

The defender has developed a squeal. I assumed it was the brakes but now its knocking so now im not so sure.....

Usually it starts after driving 10 miles or so and is only really audible/noticeable under 15 miles an hour...

Ive got a video which i will upload heres a link

It starts knock about 12 seconds in
Thanks
Rob

Appreciate you say it’s audible at lower speeds but when travelling faster is it still there?

Its not really audible at faster speeds. All of the pads/discs are making the same noise as you spin the wheels. I had it on axle stands yesterday and there is no squeL when you spin the wheels....

I had a similar issue a few years back and turned out to be a stone wedged where the handbrake meets rear wheels.
Sorry but can’t be any more helpful

Hey.

I tried pushing/pulling/shaking the props but they didnt move. I assume they're not knackered at that?

How did you fix the stone in the hb??? Drum off???

Is the hand brake not at the back of the transmission then like other Defenders?

With the prop removed you can see if any of the ujs are dry and tight, and drive it with rear off as above

No idea, I’m not a mechanic I’m afraid. That’s what I was told was the cause of my noise.

I've never been under a new defender but I'd assume they all have the same parking brake system. Drum brake on transmission not wheels.

I recon that's coming from the transmission brake. If the springs have snaped allowing the shoes to touch the drum and run metal to metal. The nock is the shoe jumping up and down. That's my best guess. I had that with a Mercedes once the handbrake/footbrake springs had snaped. Making a noise like that
