If you haven't already got a copy of a workshop manual or RAVE (the electronic version), lets us know we can usually do pics and/or downloads pointers ...

Don't worry it's not too tricky, just to check the UJ's ... Universal Joints on the prop shafts, these should be checked periodically for wear ... some have grease nipples built in ...

Yes, and if they have nipples, grease em while you are under there. Save the UJs and sliding joint failing soon.

Not to worry, the 200TDi only has two belts anyway; the main belt (fan belt), goes from crankshaft pulley to fan, then to water pump, then alternator (this has a double-grooved pulley) ...

the other belt (aux belt), goes from the same double pulley to the power steering pump ...

I want to give the most information possible. So when going at those speeds I shouldn't have any issues with the drive shaft or anything in that department. But when I would push the 45-55 mph it would hmmm like something wasn't right. Any idea or just tell me to follow along so we can get to that area.

Our super gearbox specialist says the output seal is leaking, this makes life a bit more expensive for you ...

Do you have a decent shop near you that is good with 4X4 or even knows about Land Rovers ?

It's Killeen Texas. One of the worst places known to man. But I have a shop I go to. I'm just worried they aren't up to the task. It's not a specialty in 4x4 but they do it all. Plus the only ones I trust in this area. How expensive are we looking? And why wasn't the defender built to go those kinds of speeds and anyway I can upgrade it so it can?

You might be able to order parts off the net, and get them mailed.

Its an off road vehicle, most of the time you only go a few mph off road.

You might go faster by fitting a V8, if you havent got one already.

And yes, the USA is a Sh!thole. Or rather, it s nice place, but with a lot of idiots living in it.

Absolutely and idiots who think they can fix anything. So where the gear box is is where the leak is at? The seal that needs replacing?

I don't mind ordering the parts I just have to know what I'm getting myself into. Weekend job or longer? Can it be a one man job. I was a horrible owner and instead of greasing everything up or making sure I have good fluid within my axles and transmission. I just took it out and drove it. So now I sit and reap what I sewn. I have to replace the u joints anyway as it is clanking quite a bit when I shift. So I might as well drop and fix that seal.

45 - 55mph is fine on the highway, cruising at that will give great fuel returns, but it'll need to be serviced regular, (which isn't difficult and will save you money to spend on toys for it) or even for the bigger repairs that you can't do yourself ...

look at the hand brake drum, to get to seal prop needs to come off ,drum and 30mm nut holding the drive flange on ,but id check t/box has oil in it first, level plug is an 1/2 inch square drive a 1/2 ratchet and short extension are ideal for removing it

Need to be sure of where the problem(s) is first.

You'll probably need to clean it up a bit underneath before you can be sure where oil is coming from.

Dropping the box isn't really a novice job especially on your own ... but luckily you are in good hands with the advice on here and if you need it step-by-step instructions ...

I think James means the seal on the output shaft of the transfer box, bolted on the back of the gearbox. And it isnt a huge job, but time will depend on experience, how good your tools are, and if you discover other problems while you are in there.

Defenders like regular care and attention to the many small maintenance items, like oil changes and levels, grease points, and general TLC. Look after it, it will look after you. it is not like a modern disposable vehicle, with many sealed for life components.

Small steps dude, let's be sure where we will be digging ...

Clean it up, check the oil level in the transfer box and we will go from there ...
 
Gentlemen I cannot thank you all enough for the advice. I just need to know where to start looking. So I can narrow it down from it being in the engine area and focus on other. So I will clean it up get some pictures and go from there. Please have patience with me to take care of this as I am a little slower at catching on but have the determination. So start with the transfer box and oil level of it??

The transfer box is the last shiny bit on the left, with the levers sticking out the top, (the rusty brown bit is the handbrake drum), the filler/level plug is behind(ish) the drum ...
