I have a 1996 Disco TDI 73.000 miles which has recently developed a squeak from the engine department:eek: I have done all the usual spraying of WD 40 etc and it still squeaks.I suspect it is the water pump:confused:

Can anybody tell me if this situation is ok (as long as I don't mind the squeak) or is it likely to develop into a more serious situation like the water pump packing up miles away from home??

I have noticed that some other Discos I have seen about seem to be squeaking as well.

hi
a new belt always cures the sqeak on mine last one lasted about 12 months and then a little squeak started to develop getting proggesivly worst untill i could take no more, again a new belt cured it

Is it the belt tensioner that is causing your squeek as they are prone to failure. Take the serpentine (grooved fan belt) belt off and check for roughness in the tensioner bearing, you can either replace the bearing itself by pressing it out or just buy a new pulley assembly from the usual suspects...

Hi

I had a squeek coming from that area, and changed the serptine belt, it was better but still wasn't 100% happy with it so cleaned up all the pulleys. That seemed to cure it, it squeeks a little if it's been stood for a few days, but stops squeekin after a few mins.

Thanks for your replies everybody. This afternoon I had another more intensive go with the WD 40 and just at the point of giving up the squeak stopped for a split second:D .I sprayed the same spot again and sure enough it stopped the squeak!I had to put a lot of WD 40 on it to have any effect. I suspect that when I run the car a bit tomorrow the noise will come back:( I'm not sure what the part was I sprayed but it was to the left and slightly down of the alternator??? I have had a look in my Haynes manual but it doesnt clearly identify the part:confused:

I think i might know what the part is thats squeaking???? It could be the idler pulley just to the left of the alternator :( Has anybody had any success in trying to get any lubrication into this part whilst in situ?? and if not is it a big job to change it??

Hi, about a year ago my water pump started getting noisy right after I gunked the engine, I tried wd40 and and it cured it short term but would always come back so I thought sod it and put up with it until about 8k miles later when the noise got louder so I changed the water pump, all the seals and bearings were breaking up, time for a new belt and that cured it and 4k miles later its squeeking again so I just put up with it. My advice is if it makes noise when you turn it without the serpentine belts on and feel any roughness or excess movement, bin it and get a new one, its easy to do and will take you about an hour if you have big hands less with smaller.
