Hi guys,

My hippo has developed what sounds like brake squeal lately, but when the breaks arent applied!! When im driving in a straight line, occasionally it sounds like my breaks are squealing.. If i put in some steering angle or press the brakes, it goes away!! Its very intermittent but id say it is slowly getting worse.

Im going to jack it up tomorrow and take a look.. I cant do it tonite as my driveway is just chippings (so no good to jack up on) and i live down a lane about 150 yards away from a tarmac road.. So frankly cant be bothered this late in the day..

Any of you peeps got some overnite suggestions for me?? Im thinking maybe my brake pads are worn down and maybe a liitle toose in the caliper?? And hen rubbing on the disc ever so slightly?? But then again, i may be full of **** cos theres no grinding whatsoever whn i press the pedal..

Suggestions please

You can usually resolve break squeals with a bit of copper grease between pads and pistons, sometimes there are anti squeal shims that go between pistons and pads

Thanks Jailon..

Bought some on the way home from work.. If it stops piddling down with rain this afternoon, ill get out there, jack it up and apply it.

cheers freelance,

When i jack her up tomorrow (if it ever stops raining here in wales:rolleyes:) ill check it out whils applying the copper grease to the back of the pads...

I love summer in Wales.. Its my favourite day o the year!!!!:D:D

Your disc pads could be worn and the squeal is the early warning signal. There is a metal tab that scrapes the rotor to make that noise

Cheers Fur Trapper,

That was my first thought too... Guess what, its still raining in south wales!! But, hold your breath - we MAY have a dry day here tomorrow (not bad for august)

Ill be jacking her up tomorrow for a good inspection.. Got some copper grease ready incase its not worn pads too :D

Mine do exactly the same thing - usually after a run when they are warm. I am ordering some anti squeal pads which are stuck on the backs of the disc pads. I have used them on my kit car (4 pot Wilwoods) with success - they used to squeal like a stuck pig!

Well guys,

Looks like freelance was the closest...

Jacked her up, took pads out, only to find they werent even worn down to the halfway point..

Cleaned em up, put em back in (with some copper grease on the back ;)) but noticed that there was crap and a bit of corrosion on the outside edge or the drivers side disc, so cleaned that off too, and so far so good..

Its amazing what you can get around to when you actually have a dry day in summer, isnt it

Cheers for all the advice.

For the love of god men... HELP ME!!!!

The noise is back!! Ive had the brakes stripped down by my mate (who services 4x4's for a living) more than 3/4 of the meat are still left on the pads, the discs have no rust/**** on em, there is copper grease on the back of the pads facing the pistons, but the noise still comes back!!

Never when cold, only when warm.. I live 14 miles from where i work.. if the hippo is left overnight and taken to work the next day, it gets to work with no squealing.. if the hippo does the same, but then an extra journery (e.g with wifey) it squeals like a pig in deliverence...

Same as before.. squealing in a straight line.. if i just rest my foot on the pedal whilst going, the noise goes, if i put the slightest angle into the steering (left or right) it goes....

Its doing my fecking head in!!! GRRRRRR!!!!

Brake performance normal, pedal normal, fluids normal... AAARGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

For the love of good LR boffins, HELP ME!!!

Had the same thing on an old Ford.

Turned out to be the wheel bearing on its way out, changed that and it was perfect after that.

Just a thought!

Just to update you guys, incase anyone else gets it..

I traced the problem to the front left brake pad which had a lump of bad material on it.. It was absolutely rock solid and not wearing down in line with the rest of the pad..

I put a new set of pads on and have now done 600 miles since, no noises at all ! 1 Happy man.
